The writing process for Hip to the Bone started with a Logic Pro X 70’s drum loop. Hip to the Bone was finished chronologically; starting with the intro and writing towards the outro. I showed Felix and Kyle the very raw demo and they loved it. It reminded them and myself of a classic Japanese jazz/fusion tune. High energy, dry drums, catchy melodies, punchy bass lines, complex harmony, etc… The most difficult part of the writing process for me was figuring out where to go after the intro. I used a fun math trick during the transition/tempo change. The tempo change was calculated so that the 16th notes in the original tempo (133bpm) amount to the exact same overall duration of time as the 16th note triplets after the tempo change (89bpm). In other words, the subdivisions at their respective tempos are played in a different feel, but occupy the exact same amount of time. By doing this, the transition between two completely different tempos and feels would be less obtrusive. Fun stuff! - Jordan
