I’m a sucker for strings, I’ll readily admit that. I’ve been listening to Opeth’s In Cauda Venenum almost nonstop ever since it came out in late 2019, and that album features some really beautiful string sections. Shortly after, Pat Metheny released another album in early 2020, which again has an absolutely wonderful string arrangement throughout, and that was the album that convinced me that I had to write a song with strings. It’s structured like a classic Uzeb song, meaning main theme-guitar solo-main theme-bass solo-outro type structure. The guitar solo makes use of a lot of nonfunctional chords, so it hinges on the “wrong notes” feel a lot of classic jazz songs had. The bass solo is played on a simpler chord progression, to give a stronger sense of emotion and finality. The ending was rewritten multiple times, originally we had a very complicated ending with a ton of fast notes, and that version even made it as far as the recording stage! Despite that, we settled on a calm, acoustic ballad to properly close our debut. - Felix
